Starting Your Herb Garden

This is an informational class presented by Master Gardener, Nancy Lahmers with co-host Kathy Watson.

Learn how easy herbs are to grow. We will discuss the basics of garden design to create a visually pleasing and functional herb garden for your use. Also, we will cover some historical uses of these plants including medicine, seasoning, fragrance and display.

Common questions that will be answered:

  • Which herbs to plant?

  • Should I use seeds or starter plants?

  • When and where to plant?

  • What are the best growing conditions?

  • In pots or in the ground?

  • Will they survive the winter?

Instructor: Nancy Lahmers Nancy Lahmers is a Franklin County Master Gardener with a passion for herbs and getting her hands dirty. She was the herb co-chair for OSU’s Chadwick Arboretum’s annual plant sale and has many herbs growing at her home. She is a retired OSU educator.

When she is not gardening, she enjoys bicycling, volunteering as a docent at Columbus Museum of Art and is on the Board of the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio.
Instructor: Kathy Watson Kathy Watson retired 2 years ago from OSU Medical Center after 40 + years as a registered nurse. In her leisure time she completed the Franklin County Master Gardener Volunteer program in 2022. Kathy continues to volunteer in several gardening projects around Columbus. You may find her maintaining the gardens at the Ross Community Garden at OSU, helping Columbus City School students and 4-H students learn about growing produce, helping out at Chadwick Arboretum or volunteering at Franklin Park Conservatory. She enjoys her own home garden of native perennials, heirloom vegetables, and a multitude of annuals and herbs. In her non-gardening time, she loves board games, photography and volunteering at Columbus Humane.
