2018 Gingerbread Competition

Join in the baking and decorating fun for the Conservatory’s 12th Annual Gingerbread Competition. This year, the theme is participant’s choice! Use your imagination to create embellished delectable designs in whatever theme you choose.

New this year, the Gingerbread Competition will consist of two separate displays running back-to-back during the Conservatory Aglow exhibition.

The first display (November 17–December 9) will feature the Professional Category.

The second display (December 11–January 2, 2019) will showcase the Youth, Adults, and Family/Community Organization Categories.

Prizes, important dates, guidelines and application directions for each category are outlined below.

Professional Category

New to the Gingerbread Competition is the Professional Category, celebrating the art and craft of sculpting edible works of art. Local bakers, bakeries, chefs, caterers, and artists are welcome to join the competition. This year, the theme is participant’s choice! Use your imagination to create embellished delectable designs in whatever theme you choose.


Prizes

From November 17 through December 7, 2018, Conservatory patrons will receive one ticket to vote on their favorite professional gingerbread entry. A $500 Cash Prize for Best of Show will be awarded to the entry with the most votes.

The Conservatory will award prizes for first through third place. Entries will be judged in four categories: Overall Appearance, Originality/Creativity, Difficulty, and Use of Materials. All rulings by the judges are independent and final. They are in no way influenced by Franklin Park Conservatory staff or affiliates.

1st Place: $300 Conservatory Gift Card*
2nd Place: Conservatory Family Membership
3rd Place: Two (2) Conservatory Class Vouchers**
Best in Show: $500 Cash Prize

*Gift Card is redeemable at Botanica Gift Shop, for daily admission, Garden Cafe and Food Truck or may be applied to membership good for one year from date of issue. Vouchers redeemable for one calendar year from date of issue.
**Conservatory class vouchers are redeemable for any class held at the Conservatory for two people up to a $100 value. Click here for Conservatory class offerings.


Important Dates

Entry Deadline: November 1

Entry Delivery: November 15, 10am to 5pm

Display Opens: Saturday, November 17

1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Winners Announced: By November 26

Best in Show Announced: December 7

Display Closes: December 9

Entry Pick Up: December 10, 10am to 5pm. After December 10, all remaining entries will be discarded.


Guidelines & Liability

All rulings by the judges are independent and final. They are in no way influenced by Franklin Park Conservatory staff or affiliates.

Except for the base, all visible surfaces must be made entirely out of edible products.

Entries are not to exceed 20” x 20” x 20” including board base. Using ½” or ¾” plywood as a base for your entry is recommended.

All entries must be labeled with entrant’s name and contact information when dropped off.

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens reserves the right to refuse any entry it deems inappropriate for display.

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens reserves the right to photograph and use images of any or all entries for purposes of promotion.

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens does not guarantee the safety or security of entries and cannot be held responsible for any damages incurred during the exhibition.

From December 11 through December 31, 2018, Conservatory patrons will receive one ticket to vote on their favorite amateur gingerbread entry. A $500 Cash Prize for Best of Show will be awarded to the entry with the most votes.

The Conservatory will award prizes in each of the three categories for the first through third place. Entries will be judged in two categories: Overall Appearance and Originality/Creativity. All rulings by the judges are independent and final. They are in no way influenced by Franklin Park Conservatory staff or affiliates.

Guidelines & Liability

Please ensure entry form is with your entry upon delivery. Contestants may, if desired, include a 3” x 5” card with their entry describing their theme or inspiration.

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens reserves the right to refuse any entry it deems inappropriate for display.

Youth contestants may receive assistance from an adult in the baking of the gingerbread, however all design, assembly, and decoration must be completed exclusively by the youth.

Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens reserves the right to photograph and use images of any or all entries for purposes of promotion.

Please use your best judgement in deciding which category best fits your work. A Professional category has been added as part of the Gingerbread competition. The Professional portion of the competition will be displayed November 17 through December 9. Entry deadline for the Professional category is November 1, 2018.
