A few weeks ago, members of the Monarch Society enjoyed a special opportunity to go behind the scenes of one of the Conservatory’s most beloved seasonal traditions, Pumpkins Aglow. Guided by our Exhibitions team, guests learned how this seasonal favorite comes together through months of planning, growing, and creative design.
Along the way, members learned about the planning and logistics that are behind the remarkable scale of the exhibition. More than 2,500 pumpkins are incorporated throughout this year’s displays, delivered by semi-truck to the Conservatory in more than 60 bins! Members also learned that the vibrant seasonal landscape begins long before autumn arrives. More than 900 mums and 500 fall annuals and crops featured in Harvest Blooms were grown specifically for this year’s exhibition in the Conservatory’s production greenhouse.
The tour also highlighted the horticultural expertise behind the seasonal transition. Guests saw how select summer annuals, including lantana, salvia, and Ageratum ‘Monarch Magic,’ are intentionally carried over from summer into the fall displays because they continue blooming through cooler temperatures. These vibrant plants help ensure the gardens remain full of color while fall mums begin to open.
Just as monarch butterflies symbolize transformation, Monarch Society members help make transformational impact possible across the Conservatory’s educational programs, community outreach efforts, horticultural initiatives, and arts and culture experiences. Their consistent support provides the foundation that allows the Conservatory to grow, innovate, and serve our community in meaningful ways.
