Housed in the outdoor glassblowing pavilion of the North Courtyard, the Hot Shop features daily demonstrations from April to December by local, professional gaffers (master glassblowers) as they gather molten glass and transform it into a finished piece of blown-glass artwork. Every step of the process is described in informative, 25-minute sessions.
Hot Shop Studio Classes 2021
Try your hand at glassblowing! Check out available classes below.
Know Before You Go:
No experience is necessary! Hot Shop classes are open to everyone over the age of 10. Children and teens ages 10-17 must have a parent or guardian present.
The Hot Shop is located outside in the North Courtyard of the Conservatory so please dress for the weather.
Each student will take home one piece of artwork. All glass pieces need overnight annealing (a cooling process) and will be ready for pick up or shipment the next day after 3pm.
Shipment is available for an additional cost to the visitor.
Terrariums can be shipped but must be sent without the kit as it includes the live plants. Just the glass piece will be shipped.
Class size ranges from 5 to 10 students depending on the piece being created.
For safety, the Conservatory has invested in an alternative inflation device that allows forced air to be used in the glass blowing process instead of participants sharing a pipe. Other steps in the process- turning, firing, etc- will be led by a gaffer with student participation.
