The Inaugural Flutter Run 5k Honors Nature, Community and Pollinators

Published September 19, 2024

The inaugural Franklin Park Conservatory Flutter Run 5k was ready to kick off as the early morning sun rose across Columbus. Excitement buzzed as runners, walkers, families and volunteers gathered at the Grand Mallway, preparing to run through the Conservatory grounds and Franklin Park.

The event, held on June 30, with Presenting Sponsor support from Intel, featured something for everyone. The Caterpillar Crawl Kids run, designed for children ages eight and under, took participants on a fun journey through the Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation Children’s Garden. Afterward, the Bug Man and other fun nature-based activities were set up within the Garden.

The festive atmosphere continued as families and friends cheered on nearly 300 5k participants as they ran, fluttered or walked to the finish. The course, winding through scenic Franklin Park, provided a physical challenge while celebrating nature and the importance of pollinators.

After the race, participants explored the Conservatory’s butterfly and pollinator-themed exhibitions, including the new interactive Color, Fly, Butterfly exhibition and the beloved Blooms & Butterflies. Participants also took home seed packets and pollinator plants to attract pollinators to their yards.

Columbus Running Company played a significant role in making the Flutter Run 5k successful. Their expertise in route planning, race logistics, signage, registration and race website management ensured that every detail was thoughtfully managed while making sure the event ran smoothly. Intel, the event’s presenting sponsor, generously provided crucial support that helped bring the Flutter Run 5k to life. Intel also provided a water station, race shirts for all participants, special prizes for the event’s top finishers, kids activities and brought their team to run and support. Giant Eagle made significant contributions by providing snacks and water for participants, keeping everyone hydrated and energized during and after the race.

The impact of the Flutter Run 5k extends far beyond race day. Over 90% of registration fees went directly back to support the Conservatory’s mission. This support helps sustain impactful programs, from hands-on nature-based education to cultural exhibitions, that inform and inspire learners of all ages.

The Flutter Run also had a personal impact on participants. One runner shared, “I signed up for the Flutter Run because my friends were running. I did not want to run so I walked, but the impact of the experience has carried into my daily life. Since the race, I’ve committed to a daily 30-minute outdoor walk. The event motivated me to get outside in nature more and adopt healthy lifestyle habits.”

The Flutter Run 5k success is a testament to the generous support of donors, sponsors, volunteers and participants. These contributions raised over $13,000 for the Conservatory’s mission, and we are thrilled with the positive feedback from our inaugural event. We look forward to continuing this tradition and invite you to mark your calendars for the next Flutter Run on June 21, 2025, in conjunction with our Pollinator Palooza.
